How to Secure Your UPI Apps If Mobile Is Lost?

Losing a mobile phone in India is not only about losing photos, contacts and WhatsApp chats anymore. Today, that small device carries your bank accounts, UPI apps, shopping accounts, Aadhaar-linked services, email, SIM card, OTPs, passwords and sometimes even business payments. A lost phone can quickly become a financial risk if it falls into the wrong hands. The most worrying thought is simple: “What if someone opens my PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM or banking app and transfers money?”

This fear is real, but panic is not the solution. UPI apps have multiple safety layers like phone screen lock, app lock, SIM verification and UPI PIN. Without your UPI PIN, money cannot usually be transferred. But if your phone is unlocked, your SIM is active, notifications are visible, or your passwords are saved carelessly, the risk increases. That is why the first few hours after losing a phone are extremely important.

The right action plan can protect your money, block misuse and help you recover control. Whether your phone was stolen in a market, left in an auto, misplaced in office, lost during travel or snatched on the road, you should act fast and follow the steps in the correct order.

How to Secure Your UPI Apps If Mobile Is Lost

First Step: Call Your Number Immediately

As soon as you realise your phone is missing, call your number from another phone. If it rings nearby, you may be able to locate it quickly. If someone answers, speak carefully and avoid sharing personal details.

If the phone is switched off suddenly, unreachable, or the person on the other side behaves suspiciously, treat it as a possible theft. Do not waste too much time hoping it will come back on its own.

If you can see the phone’s location through a tracking service, do not go alone to confront anyone. Take help from police or trusted people.

Lock Your Phone Remotely

If your lost phone is an Android device, use Google’s Find Hub or Find My Device feature from another phone or computer. Sign in with the same Google account used on the lost phone. From there, you may be able to locate the phone, play sound, lock it, display a message or erase data.

Locking the phone remotely is one of the most important steps because it prevents easy access to your apps. You can also show a message on the lock screen with an alternate contact number so an honest finder can reach you.

If you are sure the phone is stolen and recovery looks difficult, remote erase may be considered. But remember, after erasing, location tracking may become limited. Use this option carefully.

Block Your SIM Card Quickly

Your SIM card is directly connected to UPI safety because OTPs, bank alerts and UPI registration depend on the mobile number. If the thief removes your SIM and puts it in another phone, they may try to misuse your number for account access.

Call your telecom operator immediately and request SIM blocking. You can contact customer care or visit the nearest store with ID proof. Ask them to block the lost SIM and issue a duplicate SIM.

This step is very important for Airtel, Jio, Vi, BSNL or any other operator. Once the SIM is blocked, OTP misuse risk reduces significantly.

After getting a duplicate SIM, avoid rushing into all apps immediately. First secure your banking, email and UPI accounts properly.

Inform Your Bank and Block UPI Access

Call your bank’s official customer care number and inform them that your mobile phone with active UPI apps has been lost or stolen. Request them to temporarily block UPI access or take necessary security action for your linked account.

If you have multiple bank accounts connected to different UPI apps, contact each important bank. This is especially important if your phone was unlocked, stolen, or had weak screen security.

Use only official bank helpline numbers from the bank website, bank app, passbook, debit card back side or verified sources. Do not search randomly and call numbers from unknown websites, because fake customer care scams are common.

Contact UPI App Support

If you use PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay or any other UPI app, contact their support and report that your phone is lost. Ask them how to secure or temporarily block app access.

Some apps allow account logout, device removal, account suspension or fraud reporting through customer support. If you still have access to the same account on another device, check settings carefully and remove the lost device if the option is available.

Do not depend on only one app’s support. If multiple UPI apps were installed, secure all of them.

Change Your Google Account Password

Your Google account controls Android device access, Gmail, saved passwords, app data and sometimes payment-related information. After losing a phone, change your Google account password from another trusted device.

Then open your Google account security settings and check signed-in devices. Remove the lost phone if needed. Also turn on two-step verification if it is not already active.

If your Gmail is logged in on the lost phone, a thief may try to reset passwords of other apps using email access. Securing email is as important as securing UPI.

Change Important App Passwords

After securing the SIM and Google account, change passwords for important apps. Start with email, net banking, shopping apps, wallet apps, investment apps, social media and cloud storage.

Many people save passwords in browsers or notes apps. If your phone was unlocked or had weak protection, these saved passwords can be risky.

Do not use the same password everywhere. If one password is exposed, other accounts can also be attacked. Use strong and different passwords for major accounts.

Check Bank Statement and UPI History

After losing your phone, check bank account activity from net banking, another phone, ATM mini statement or by calling the bank. Look for unknown UPI transfers, wallet payments, card payments or failed attempts.

If you notice any unauthorised transaction, report it to the bank immediately. The sooner you report, the better your chance of limiting loss and starting investigation.

Keep screenshots, transaction IDs, messages and call details safely. These may be needed for complaint filing.

Report Financial Fraud Immediately

If money has been deducted without your permission, call the national cyber fraud helpline 1930 as soon as possible. Also file a complaint on the official cybercrime reporting portal.

Time matters in digital payment fraud. Quick reporting may help authorities act faster to trace or freeze the money trail.

Do not delay because of embarrassment. Many smart and educated people become victims of digital fraud. Fast action is more important than self-blame.

Block the Phone Through IMEI

Apart from securing UPI apps, you should also block the lost mobile handset so it cannot be easily used with another SIM. India’s Sanchar Saathi/CEIR facility allows users to request blocking of lost or stolen phones using the IMEI number.

For this, you may need details like mobile number, IMEI, invoice information, police complaint and ID proof. Keep your phone’s IMEI saved separately in the future. You can usually find it on the phone box, bill or by checking your Google device details if available.

Blocking the IMEI can reduce misuse and may support recovery if the phone is found.

File a Police Complaint

For a stolen phone, file a police complaint or FIR as per local procedure. This is useful for SIM replacement, IMEI blocking, insurance claims and legal protection if the device is misused.

Mention the phone model, colour, IMEI number, mobile number, location, time and how it was lost or stolen. Keep a copy of the complaint.

Even if the phone seems low-cost, the data inside it is valuable. Filing a complaint creates an official record.

Do Not Share OTPs During Recovery

After losing a phone, you may receive calls from people claiming they can recover it, unlock it, block it, or help with police or telecom process. Be careful.

Never share OTP, UPI PIN, net banking password, debit card PIN or screen-sharing access with anyone. Genuine bank, police, telecom or UPI support teams do not need your UPI PIN.

Scammers often target people when they are already stressed. Stay alert and verify every call.

Why UPI PIN Is Still Important

UPI payments need a UPI PIN to transfer money. This is a strong safety layer. If your UPI PIN is not known to anyone, the thief cannot simply open the app and transfer money in most cases.

But do not become careless. If your phone has no screen lock, app lock is disabled, SMS notifications are visible on lock screen, or your UPI PIN is written in notes, the risk becomes higher.

Never save UPI PIN, ATM PIN or passwords in the phone gallery, contacts, notes or WhatsApp chat.

Secure Lock Screen Before Any Loss Happens

Prevention is better than emergency repair. Every UPI user should use a strong lock screen. Use fingerprint or face unlock along with a strong PIN, password or pattern.

Avoid simple PINs like 1234, 0000, birth year or vehicle number. Do not use the same PIN for phone unlock and UPI PIN.

Also hide sensitive notifications on the lock screen. OTPs and bank alerts should not be fully visible when the phone is locked.

Use App Lock for UPI Apps

Most Android phones offer app lock or secure folder features. Use app lock for UPI apps, banking apps, email, SMS, WhatsApp and password manager.

This adds another layer even if someone unlocks your phone. Some UPI apps already ask for fingerprint or passcode, but an extra app lock can help.

Keep your phone’s security updated. Do not disable app locks just for convenience.

Avoid Saving Banking Details Carelessly

Do not keep photos of debit cards, Aadhaar, PAN, bank passbook, cheque book or passwords in your phone gallery. If needed, store sensitive documents in a protected digital locker or encrypted folder.

Many people save screenshots of card details, UPI IDs, passwords or recovery codes. This is risky if the phone is lost.

Also avoid sharing sensitive documents casually on WhatsApp. Old chats can become a data risk.

Keep a Backup Phone Plan

If your life depends heavily on UPI, keep a backup plan. Save bank helpline numbers, telecom customer care numbers and UPI app support contacts somewhere outside your phone. Keep your phone bill and IMEI details in email or printed form.

Maintain at least one alternate payment method, such as a debit card, net banking access, or a small amount of cash for emergencies. If your phone is lost while travelling, this can save you from panic.

What to Do After Getting a New Phone

When you get a new phone and duplicate SIM, reinstall UPI apps only from the official app store. Register UPI again carefully. Set a fresh UPI PIN if needed.

Check linked bank accounts and remove any unknown UPI IDs or devices if the app provides such options. Also review auto-pay mandates, subscriptions and recent transactions.

Do not restore unknown apps from old backups blindly. Install only trusted apps.

Simple Emergency Checklist

If your phone is lost, act in this order: call the phone, remotely lock it, block SIM, inform bank, contact UPI app support, change Google and email passwords, check bank transactions, report fraud if any, block IMEI through Sanchar Saathi/CEIR and file a police complaint.

These steps may feel many, but they protect your money, identity and personal data.
